At Changing Space conference I used Roadblocks and Roadworks to talk about barriers in learning to read and strategies of how we can reduce these barriers.
Hub Padlet - Sharing Home Learning This is an intervention to strengthening parent partnerships by creating a three-way level of communication; whānau, child, and teacher. A parent focus group suggested a Hub Padlet to not only share their child's home learning but to also get ideas from other parents about how to support their child. Teachers comment on the learning, provide feedback, and feedforward. The next step in my leadership is to measure this impact at two points in the year, beginning and end. Also, to continue share this practise the influence it has - help others to make this their own. Breakthrough in Reading - Project lead A passion lead breakthrough set up during reading time to extend those learners who are more able and are making accelerated progress. This initiative was set up to keep these learners engaged and motivated through real and authentic learning. https://travelingteddies78.blogspot.com/ In our Year 2/3 hubs we are having a focus on oral language through writing opportunities. In each hub we have the classroom teddy bear that goes home with a learner who has an experience with the teddy and will write a blog post or email a piece of writing to their teacher to upload on the blog. We are celebrating writing, motivating our learners in light of increasing engagement.
Had such a great in debt conversation with the Reading Recovery teacher at Meadowbank School. She reiterated the benefits of using the data from 6Year Net results. Fluency is a big umbrella in reading, that is where we want to get our learners - reading fluently. Fluency is such a big thing, if learners are fluent will know what is going to fit in there (the unknown word) straight away. For some we need to change the mindset of texts that may not be seen as easy or one level lower than instructional level, as these texts are important for fluency and using strategies to read tricky words. This is s o important when you get up the higher levels. My take aways were using Elkonin boxes, creating fluency boxes, and getting the buy in from learners finding out about what are their passions. As of next week I will be taking the yellow and blue readers so I can continue these strategies with these learners.
